Where she draws the line, however, is working with artists who support the current regime. “There has never been any doubt in my mind that we can’t hold literature or Russian culture hostage,” she said. But Wilson strongly opposes any suggestion that Russian composers are somehow tainted by Putin’s aggression. The tour hit 10 European cities plus New York and Washington, gathering glowing reviews with programs that included, in addition to the Dvořák, a symphony by Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, works by Brahms and Chopin, and two operatic arias sung by Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska.īecause of the orchestra’s unique political mission, no Russian music was included in those concerts. ![]() And by the fourth day, the Dvořák just rocked.” With only 10 days to rehearse together in Warsaw before launching the tour, Wilson recalled, “The first day was quite rough, and we just played Dvořák’s ‘New World Symphony.’ The second day, after seven hours I was astonished. They were maybe relocating, desperately trying to find homes, jobs in other countries. “And a lot of them hadn’t been playing for months. “It was a select group, but really quite raw,” she said. Quickly, Wilson assembled a group of 75 Ukrainian musicians, some of them recent refugees, some members of European orchestras, and others still living in their embattled country. He contacted the head of the Polish National Opera, and together they arranged funding and tour dates for the new orchestra. Peter is Peter Gelb, Wilson’s husband and the Met’s general manager. “And I was just constantly crying and saying we have to do something, and that’s when the tour was born.” Three weeks later, “I was supposed to go to Odessa to conduct, and instead I met Peter in London,” she said. Wilson, who traces her own Ukrainian ancestry to great-grandparents on her mother’s side, recalled being in Europe when the assault began in February. Hers were the guiding hands that molded the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, an ensemble founded as a musical statement of defiance against Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. ![]() NEW YORK (AP) - It’s been quite a year for conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, forming an orchestra from scratch, leading it on a 12-city tour, and then as soon as it disbanded going straight to the Metropolitan Opera to prepare for an opening-week debut. In terms of what is still available in this style today, I would rank Beauty and the Beast alongside The Night (Frederic Malle), Mukhallat Dahn al Oudh Moattaq (Ajmal), Al Hareem (Sultan Pasha Attars), and Al Noukhba Elite Blend (Abdul Samad al Qurashi). It is strong, rich, long-lasting, but most of all, interesting and beautiful from every angle, from top to toe. There is nothing really new or innovative about the rose-oud pairing, but Beauty and the Beast is worth your time and money if you are looking for an exemplar of the heights it can scale when only truly excellent materials are used. This evolution, this symbiotic dance, lasts for a whole 24 hours, so you have ample time to luxuriate in its every transition. First, the character is pungent and sweet, then it is leathery and winey, then it is dry, woody-spicy and jellied-loukhoum-like. The two materials continue to evolve and in doing so, change the character of the rose-oud pairing we are smelling. So, when the oud reveals that regal, spicy leather underpinning so typical of high-quality Hindi ouds, the rose offers up its truffles and wine. Later, however, when there is more room to breathe, the rose offers up a kaleidoscope of different ‘flavors’, cycling through wine and chocolate to raspberry liquor, Turkish delight, truffles, and finally, that traditional rose-sandalwood ‘attar’ scent.īut it is crucial to note that these nuances all unfold in sequence, matching step for step the series of nuances emerging from the Hindi oud. When the Hindi oud at first challenges the senses with its pungent, feral qualities – think beasts of burden steaming together in a barn, old saddles piled on old wooden barrels in the corner, piss-soaked straw matted into the dirt floor – the rose (not Taifi, for sure, but more likely something like Rosa bourboniana, used to distill attar of roses, or Rosa damascena, used to distill ruh gulab, or a mix) is there merely to soften and sweeten things. The balancing act the materials perform is nothing short of magisterial. I am not sure that this makes a difference to the resulting oud oil, but the environmentalist in me likes the thinking around circular economy it implies. ![]() Interestingly, the ouds in Beauty and the Beast have been distilled using rose hydrosols, meaning that the water normally loaded into the still with the oud chips has been replaced with rosewater, the natural by-product of distilling roses. ![]() The Hindi oud and the rose oils used here are so complex in and of themselves that an experienced perfumer chooses wisely when they leave them alone to work their synergistic magic on each other. When the starring raw materials are this good, you don’t need to. ![]() The first sniff of Beauty and the Beast makes me realize, with great joy, that cultural ‘scent’ patrimony is never lost entirely, but rather, constantly over-written by new entrants like this.īased on the age-old Middle Eastern custom of pairing the sometimes challengingly sour, regal animalism of Hindi oud (the Beast) with the soft, winey sweetness of rose (the Beauty), Beauty and the Beast doesn’t deviate too dramatically from the basic rose-oud template. These were mukhallats that successfully positioned feral ouds against the softening backdrops of rose, ambergris, and musk, stoking a love for oud among the heretofore uninitiated. I wrote about the new generation of Amouage attars (2021) a while back, but in trying to couch my disappointment in terms of market realities, I skipped over the sense of loss – emotional and patrilineal – of never seeing the likes of Badr al Badour, Al Shomukh, and Al Molook again. Since their composition do revolve around the use and theme of Indian attars, however, it might be useful for readers to read my previous article describing the attar set first. This release, on the other hand, is a collection of spray-based fragrances (not oils) made by Russian Adam himself, rather than commissioned from an attar distiller. The first release in the History of Attar Collection was a set of traditionally-distilled attars specifically commissioned by Areej Le Dore to give its customers an idea of what Indian attars are ( thoughts and reviews of the attar set here). ![]() It’s been over a year since I’ve even had to do it so it’s likely even faster now. For FEH it is basically instant if you have the resources and if not you only have to grind maybe an hour to do it. It’s much more difficult and time consuming to raise and promote units. There’s lots of power creep that made pvp more difficult and repeat auto battle being pay wall locked but those affect casual players much less than serious ones which is the majority of this sub. You should also check on the r/fireemblemheroes because this sub has a hate boner for the game because of the changes over time. You also missed out on some free choose your legend event characters but it was only 3 total so those will only be a minor inconvenience. You will lack a roster with depth so some content won’t be possible like limited hero battles that allow only units from certain games but you can get them over time if you participate even minimally in one of the pvp modes. There’s a set of quests that give units that can get you through most of the PvE content so you will usually always have a way to complete the content. It’s f2p friendly if you want to collect not all but some of the heroes as they release but not max them completely with merges. Its one of the better games to play casually imo despite what this sub says. Summoning will get really stale and old for a while, and if you have any favorite characters who are bad but five star locked, you are pretty heavily discouraged from pulling for them because the effort isn’t nearly worth it. Its very frustrating and pulling a five star shouldn’t feel this bad. ![]() Its especially bad if you don’t summon on new or legendary banners where you can get pitybroken by garbage old five stars that are flat out worse that many of the 3-4 stars you pull today and will break pity. 85% of what you pull is a first year character that you’ll get sick of seeing after a while. Most skills worth using that aren’t ancient or a rare bone thrown every blue moon are five star locked and any new 3-4 stars are given trash or old skills with meh stats. This wouldn’t be so bad if they weren’t so stingy with how the vast majority of skills and units are five star locked. The methods that bypass these are limited and will take a very long time, especially if you don’t play in PvP modes. Progression is essentially locked behind summoning, with skills and merges only obtainable through summoning. Doesn’t help that the game gives you Brave Ike for free who is pretty much a braindead unit lol.īut more than just that, FEH has huge issues with its summoning that the developers refuse to change after all these years. Yeah you can ignore the PvP content if you want but there’s barely anything there that will actually require more thinking than just pushing the autobattle button with a decent setup. The only PvE content that isn’t autobattle trash is Lunatic and up challenge maps that get updated like once a week, Hall of Forms (a game mode you can play a few times a day that rotates in like once a month?), Chain Challenges about once a month (easily cheesed though with nuke + three dancers strat), and these weird fixed battles that require using very specific strats that you will likely YT the solution. While you will have a lot to do at first because there’s essentially over three years worth of content to burn through, once its done there’s not much of the way of PvE content and the vast majority of it can be cheesed by having a couple good units for auto battle. Unfortunately the management is frankly god awful and they’re too far gone to save the game into a better state.Įven if you decide to only do PvE. As someone who deeply loves the FE IP and used to love the game a ton, I don’t recommend it at all these days. ![]() I got hired on at Legacy Touch as Material Handler and was very eager to work for a new and growing company. I'm going to explain my story so everyone knows this is not a "FAKE REVIEW". But for a company of 50 employees, it is absolutely amazing. Is the benefits package equal to Cerner? Nope. Are they solidly in the median range? Absolutely. Is Legacy Touch at the top of the pay scale? No. Don't expect to add 30% to your salary when it comes time to convert. However, my experience as a contract-to-hire employee is that the contract rate going in is generally going to be pretty close to what you can expect when converting to a full-time, regular employee. I have no idea who the previous reviewers are or what their circumstances were, so I can't speak to their experience. ![]() But I have personally witnessed each member of the executive team stand firm on some decisions and be convinced - by a variety of different folks - to change course on others. Do all of my suggestions get implemented? Of course not. I can walk into the office of any of the VP's on any given day and they are happy to take 5 minutes to answer a question, talk through an issue or hear a suggestion. The executive team at Legacy Touch is available, approachable and committed to the success of not just the company, but the employees as well. I could keep going and going, but the point is, this is the kind of place you want to come to work. Above all, the culture at Legacy Touch is a caring culture - where new employees are personally welcomed by the CEO where managers not only understand that "life happens" but make sure you're doing ok where employees are invited to "spin the wheel" and take home prizes, just because where unexpected cost savings are immediately reinvested in upgrading the healthcare package and other employee benefits where taking time to mingle, chat and get to know the other employees isn't just encouraged, it's actually scheduled…and snacks are provided it's a place where ideas and contributions are both solicited and acknowledged, both privately and publicly. Fun, while at the same time focused on continuing the impressive year over year growth they've experienced. Relaxed, yet everyone there is genuinely invested in making the company better by doing their job well. I've seen my share and the culture at Legacy Touch is as positive and healthy and balanced as any I've come across. The importance of company culture - in my view - cannot be overstated.
